About You

Red Bend Catholic College, Forbes, is situated in the Central West Slopes and Plains of New South Wales. We are a Co-Educational Boarding School, with a student population of 750, including 132 boarders from the remote towns of Bourke, Broken Hill, Brewarrina, Goodooga, Lake Cargelligo and Tullibigeal. Forbes is a small rural community of approximately 9,000. Unfortunately, the Forbes community has taken a significant hit in the recent floods.
Through liaising with St Vincent de Paul, Legacy and Can-Assist representatives, there is a need for the OUTREACH team. The College students, male and female, are keen to go out each week, in their own time, to fulfill the client’s garden wishes.
Clients are referred to us for gardening work which may include weeding, mowing, whipper snipping, hedging, pruning, watering, clearing flood debris and planting. Also, we offer window washing (outside only).
This community connection facilitates meaningful and practical connection to the community.
Our clients come from varying backgrounds, most clients are elderly, or suffer from a disability which inhibits them from being able to get out in the garden. There are even flood victims that are overwhelmed with the enormity of the clean- up.

Impact of the grant

When the community embraces a helping hand it is a visible enhancement of spirituality and emotional well-being.
The benefits of linking the Community clients with the Outreach students are:
- People who are unable to care for their homes, yards and gardens receive a much needed helping hand
- Builds confidence in group collaboration and cooperation
- Shortens the gap between Young and the Old in the Forbes community
- Students develop a greater sense of self-awareness and appreciation for others
- Students develop negotiation skills, the ability to network and empathise can help build resolutions rather than
- Respecting diversity allows creativity and imagination to flourish developing a more tolerant society
- Students learn to work well as part of a team
- Students learn agility and adaptability to different roles and flexible working environments
- Increases students engagement in their language and communication skills, self-esteem and social integration

Red Bend Catholic College is striving to maintain a secure and welcoming learning environment which reflects commitment to justice, social awareness and personal growth through educational and community experiences.
